First they came for …

The origins of this poem are traced to a speech from Martin Niemöller. This poem that I will paste now really demonstrated how we did behave and how we should have behaved at that time. The same theme can be applied on what is happening now in Pakistan. We need to speak UP against the injustices and racism that, unfortunately,  still exists. Many nations that were involved in WWII have now come to terms with its history. For instance, Germany and Canada are teaching their students what they have done wrong during the war era. Today, the course books in Germany teach their students that what they did with Jews was absolutely wrong. They now have realized their mistakes and are making sure that it does not happen again. They asked the people at that time that when they were sending the Jews away to the  concentration camps and burning them in gas chambers, how can you not realize that what was happening around you? Why did you not speak UP against the Nazis? So here goes the poem and I hope that we also come to terms with our History esp. the Zia era and tell our students about the oppression done by those so-called leaders. Rattalization would not bring a change 🙂

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

———-

Same can be adapted for Pakistan:

When they came for Ahmedis,

I didnot speak out,

because I was not an Ahmedi.

Then they came for me

and there was no one left

to speak out for me.

To bring a change, You have to Be the change!

    • Yeah, it really is, but do we really care about it. I don’t think so 😐

We dont care about whatever happens to our brothers and sisters except for some of us. Exclude the government officials, they are of no use.

  1. Searched Niemoller and Pakistan for my most recent post, and was led to your blog. So true! I echo your thoughts in my post, and I now I feel that perhaps it was repetitive, because we seem to have the same ideas. But saheeh baat hai, if we don’t step in right now, things will not change
